Choosing Louisiana car insurance starts with understanding what each coverage pays for. The right combination depends on your household, vehicles, budget, lender requirements, and the risks you want the policy to address. Call (844) 454-1313 to discuss options.
If OMV questions a cancellation date, our Louisiana insurance cancellation notice guide separates reporting corrections, real lapses, non-use filings and hearing deadlines.

Start with liability coverage
Louisiana’s basic private-passenger liability minimum is commonly written as 15/30/25: $15,000 for bodily injury to one person, $30,000 for bodily injury in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Liability coverage addresses covered losses you cause to others; it does not repair your own car simply because you have an insurance policy.
These limits are a legal minimum, not a promise that every accident will fit within them. Compare higher limits using the same drivers and vehicles on each quote. Read the Louisiana minimum-coverage guide for examples and official sources.
Protecting your vehicle
Collision and comprehensive serve different purposes. Collision generally addresses covered damage to your vehicle from a collision or rollover. Comprehensive generally addresses covered non-collision events such as theft, hail, flood, fire, and vandalism. Deductibles, exclusions, and the policy’s loss-settlement terms matter.
Louisiana’s basic liability law does not generally require these physical-damage coverages for a private passenger car, but a finance or lease agreement may require them. Check the agreement before removing coverage or raising a deductible. “Full coverage” is an informal phrase; ask for the actual coverages and limits in writing.
Injury coverage and uninsured motorists
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage can address covered injuries caused by a driver who has no insurance or insufficient liability limits. Louisiana law provides specific rules for UM coverage and for rejecting it or choosing different limits. Review the selection form and policy rather than assuming the legal liability minimum also protects your own injuries.
Medical payments coverage is a separate optional protection for covered medical expenses. Ask who is insured, the applicable limit, and how it works with other coverage. It is not the same as UM bodily injury coverage.
When an SR-22 filing is required
An SR-22 is proof of financial responsibility supplied by an insurer for a qualifying policy. It is not a separate insurance policy and does not automatically restore a suspended license. The Louisiana SR-22 guide explains the difference between insurance steps and OMV reinstatement requirements.
If you do not own a vehicle, tell the agent about every vehicle you can use, including household and employer vehicles. A non-owner policy may be appropriate for some drivers, but ownership, regular access, and the intended use can affect eligibility and coverage.

A checklist for comparing coverage
- Use the same liability and UM limits on each quote.
- Compare collision and comprehensive deductibles separately.
- List household drivers and vehicle use accurately.
- Check lender or lease requirements.
- Ask whether rental reimbursement, towing, or other options are included.
- Compare the total policy cost, payment fees, and effective date.
- Read exclusions and confirm any SR-22 filing requirement.
